Comment on Activity: The fighting between the Shiluk and Ngok Dinka in 2009 started with the fourth annual celebration of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Peace dancers from the two communities argued who should enter the stage first at a ceremony in Malakal, capital of Upper Nile. This resulted in several deaths and sparked attacks and retaliatory attacks during January. After this followed a period of calm relations between the groups but fighting erupted again a few times in the September-November period. The main reason for a peace dance having such a tragic effect was that relations between the groups had worsened during some times due to claims over land, especially the town of Malakal.
