1992 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: Fighting between SPLM/A and SPLM/A-WN started on 27 September 1992, when William Nyuon, then number three in the SPLM/A hierarchy, initiated a coup against John Garang. As the coup was unsuccessful, Nyuon and a number of battalions loyal to him departed for Magwi, the place where they were supposed to meet with Riek Machar, the head of another splinter group, SPLM/A (Nasir). A series of clashes and ambushes ensued, reportedly with substantial loss of life on both sides.
Clashes between the two groups continued throughout the year, SPLM/A-WN frequently fighting in an alliance with Riek Machar’s SPLM/A (Nasir).
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The estimates of deaths for 1992 are highly approximate, as fighting took place in a relatively isolated area, already ravaged by conflict, precluding more accurate reporting.

1993 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: Patterns of fighting between SPLM/A and SPLM/A-WM were similar to those recorded in 1992. The alliance between SPLM/A-WM and SPLM/A (Nassir) strengthened throughout the year, leading to the integration of SPLM/A-WM in SPLM/A (Nassir) by August 1993. Further, reporting indicates that SPLM/A-WM obtained support from the Government of Sudan, being allowed refuge in the Bor garrison after William Nyuon entered into contact with the governmental forces.
