1993 Conflict Archive

Comment on Activity: Fighting between the Jikany Nuer and Lou Nuer started in 1993 as a result of increased tensions over access to water, grazing areas and fishing rights in areas co-inhabited by the two Nuer tribes. These tensions came about as drought combined with significant increases in both population and livestock forced a large number of Lou to permanently move eastwards, in Jikany territory. These were lands that Lou previously used solely during the peak of the dry season. These tensions were further aggravated by a stream of refugees flowing into Jikany territory as they fled from the state-based conflict raging between the Government of Sudan and SPLM/A (Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement/Army) in various parts of South Sudan.

Fighting in 1993 mainly took the form of violent clashes between clan-based militias (so-called burnams), with lynching and murders of important members of each clan also being reported as frequent. Violence was very intense, being fueled by weapons supplied by various tribesmen engaged in paramilitary groups. The conflict between the two clans subsided only in 1994, as a reconciliation conference was set up with the help of the various Christian churches and through some mediation of Riek Machar, leader of the Nasir faction of SPLM/A.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The number of deaths is only a very rough conservative estimate of the total number of deaths taking place as a result of the violence between the Jikani Nuer and Lou Nuer. The lack of accuracy of the estimate is mainly by the very limited reporting as a result of the already raging state-based conflict in Sudan coupled with the almost complete lack of infrastructure in the area. Maybe say why we estimated it though as being so high? And thus why we call this a war?

Comment on Activity: Clashes between the Jikany (Nuer) and Lou (Nuer) took place during May in 2009. The problems started with cattle-theft and it was a revenge attack for this theft that caused most of the deaths.
