Comment on Activity: In 1989, control over territory in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa was the most important reason for the continued fight between supporters of UDF and supporters of IFP. Continuing from the previous year, the fighting occurred between gangs or armies of both groups, often tit-for-tat violence, occurring in a pattern of attack and reaction. The most gruesome event took place in December, when Inkatha attacked a village in the Umsindusi valley. In the clash that followed, 40 people died.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The large discrepancy between the number of fatalities on the best and high estimates can be ascribed to the reporting with regards to the conflicts ongoing in South Africa in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Many times it was not clear if the victim was a member of one of the fighting groups, a civilian or belonging to a different group. These cases are only coded on the high estimate.

Comment on Activity: After the Apartheid regime lifted the State of Emergency, unbanned the ANC and freed its leader Nelson Mandela, violence in the black townships flared up. This also happened in the conflict between supporters of UDF and supporters of IFP, with the end to Apartheid in sight, both groups tried to gain as much ground as possible. This led to thousands of refugees who fled the fighting in KwaZulu-Natal. From July onwards the conflict between IFP and UDF calmed down. From this time onwards, no new entries in the UCDP database are found.
