1996 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: In 1996, the NTTT (National Taxi Task Team) came with a proposal to restructure and regulate the taxi industry. This proposal initiated a renewed conflict between Codeta and CATA, since CATA felt it needed a larger power-base in order to benefit from the reorganization plans. Much of the violence in this year was connected to attempts by one of the two associations to take over routes that belonged to the other association. Furthermore, violence resulted from CATA trying to take over Codeta ranks in a number of districts. In September of 1996, CATA and Codeta signed the 29th peace agreement. Contrary to expectations, the signing of the peace agreement led to more rather than less violence between the two groups.
