Comment on Name: UNRF (Uganda National Rescue Front)
UNRF is a splinter group from FUNA (Former Ugandan National Army). Rifts had started to appear in FUNA in late 1980 and by January 1981 a large group broke away and formed UNRF (Uganda National Rescue Front). The split occurred along ethnic lines, with the Aringa contingent of FUNA making up the new group, whereas the Kakwas remained.
Troop Size: 3000
Comment on Troop Size: In January 1981 divisions in FUNA led to a faction breaking away, creating UNRF. There is scant information about the new movement, but a freelance journalist who spent some time with UNRF reported that the group had some 3000 armed men.
Secondary Support: There are some reports that claim that Libya sent arms in support of the rebels in the West Nile. However, since these reports are vague and since the intended recipient of the alleged arms shipment (FUNA or UNRF) is unclear it can not be included.
