Comment on Activity: This year marks both the formation and destruction of MDA – LM, and thus is the only active year in the conflict. Clashes are reported to have started in late October 2000, as a faction from within MDA, led by Lin Min and Khong Lao-Su, got formed and contested the leadership of MDA, headed by Mong Sala.
One notable event occured on 24 November 2000 when Lin Min, one of the leaders of MDA – LM, was killed by MDA members during a meeting between members of MDA and MDA – LM. This triggered a bout of violence killing at least 70 , and determined the intervention of the Myanmarese (Burmese) military. In the aftermath of the military intervention, both MDA and MDA – LM were completely destroyed.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The total number of deaths resulting directly from violence between the two is impossible to ascertain with any degree of certainty. This is due to two unconnected reasons. On one hand the army intervened while fighting between the two groups was still ongoing, making it impossible to discern which deaths occured as a result of factional fighting and which as a result of the military intervention. On the other hand, for the period before 24 November 2000, reports of fighting exist, but not of the deaths occurring before this date.
As such, the high estimate for deaths include those reported after the intervention of the Myanmarese (Burmese) armed forces, while the low and best estimates only cover the deaths occurring in the immediate aftermath of the event occurring on 24 November 2000.
