Comment on Activity: What originally started as a brawl between two young members of different families at a wedding in May 1992 left two men shot, one of them crippled. The brawl grew into a feud and in early 1993 there were reports of street violence between the two families – the Garcia clan and the Pena Roja clan – in the state of Guerrero, in South-West Mexico. The violence escalated, and in February 1993 three men of the Pena Roja clan were gunned down.
Travelling from the funeral of the diseased, a pickup truck, carrying at least 26 men, was attacked. Two survivors were able to escape the attack, which left 24 Pena Rojas killed, and notified the police. They also told the police that they had recognised at least some of the perpetrators as members of the Garcia clan. Though no guns were found on the scene – the fact that the pickup carried only men has been cited to imply that they were on their way to revenge the death of their three kinsmen when they were attacked by some 40 to 50 gunmen. Relatives to the deceased claim that most of the people on the truck were merely hitching a ride and had nothing to do with the feud; the police, however, suspected that the truck’s passengers were heading for a revenge attack.
A few days after the massacre the police had been able to identify 18 suspects for the mass killing. The people, considered dangerous, were linked to drug trafficking, one of the main problems in the region. Though there was a great fear of further retaliation there were no more reported events with deadly outcome in the year.
