Comment on Activity: The conflict between the Marakwet and the Pokot erupted in January and culminated in March, when Pokot raiders attacked several Marakwet villages, stole over 1000 cattle and 2000 goats and left around 50 people dead. Before March, violence had constantly increased over disputed pasture and water sources.

Comment on Activity: The conflict between the Marakwet and Pokot was active in 2016. The violence took the form of a series of clashes throughout the year, mainly connected to cattle raids. The violence took place against the backdrop of a drought which caused Pokot herders to move closer to Marakwet areas. There were also allegations that the violence was politically motivated and that local politicians played a role in fuelling and funding the violence. In November, representatives of the two groups signed a ceasefire after negotiations chaired by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC). However, additional clashes took place in December.
