Comment on Activity: The violence between the Ajuran and the Garre began in March with a series of attacks and counter attacks, ultimately forcing many Ajuran to flee south and a large number of Garre to cross the border into Ethiopia. The fighting prompted Kenyan troops to intervene in order to calm the situation. In addition, the border between Kenya and Ethiopia was temporarily closed, significantly affecting the economy in the region. The calm lasted only for few months, and in June and July heavy fights re-erupted, leaving 50 dead. The Kenyan army and police intervened again, which de-escalted the situation until November, when in renewed clashes another 20 people were killed.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The differences in the fatalities estimate result from an unclear event in March, for which sources only suspect, but not confirm the involvement of the Ajuran. The 12 fatalities of this event were added to the high estimate only.
