Comment on Activity: Whereas the AFDL and the Mayi Mayi previously formed an alliance in the war against Mobutu, in early 1997 this alliance shattered and the Mayi Mayi started attacking the AFDL soldiers. Reasons behind this violence can be found in the reluctance of the Mayi Mayi to give up captured territory, and Kabilia’s order to disarm the Mayi Mayi.
The Mayi Mayi did not prove successful in their attacks against the AFDL however, often their attacks resulted in casualties on their own side but not in the AFDL’s ranks.
