Comment on Activity: In 2000 AUC decided to increase its armed struggle against ELN, Colombia’s second largest leftist guerrilla. Already in January there were clashes between the groups with possibly 50 casualties, though these figures have been hard to confirm. In July AUC tried to drive out ELN from what AUC leader Carlos Castaño referred to as the “only sanctuary they have left”, situated the Andean mountains of the Bolivar province in north Colombia. At least 18 guerrillas and 2 paramilitaries, though some estimates are much higher, were killed in the fighting.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The great difference in the number of casualties between the high and best/low estimate is due to the problem of confirming casualties in the fighting that often took place in remote parts of the country.

2001 Conflict Archive
Comment on Activity: The first clashes in 2001 took place inside a prison in Barrancabermeja. Prisoners from AUC and ELN, hosted in different cell blocks, were able to start the fight using firearms and explosives. The fighting left two inmates dead and several more seriously injured. Later in the year an ELN member was killed in another prison attack. Outside the prison the conflict between AUC and ELN continued. ELN, which was a struggling organisation in 2001, was at one point aided by FARC in an attack where a truck, transporting AUC paramilitaries, was blown up. 14 members of AUC were killed in the attack.
