Comment on Activity: Non-state clashes took place between the Borana clan and the Guji clan in 2006, reportedly sparked by the redrawing of territorial boundaries allocating land previously held by Boranas to Guji. Several factors contributed to the outbreak of hostilities: the split four years previously of the Borana zone, creating a separate Guji zone; the challenging of local traditional leadership by governmental decisions; and cases of castle theft occurring between the groups. Fighting broke out in late May and continued into mid-June, causing around a hundred deaths and the displacement of many thousands.
