Comment on Activity: The immediate trigger for the 2002 fighting appears to have been disagreements concerning the position as Vice President of the region. Traditionally this position had been held by a Nuer, but when the former Vice President died in 2001, the position was left vacant. According to representatives for the Nuer, they felt that the Anuak deliberately denied them the position.

2003 Conflict Archive

Comment on Activity: Fighting between Anuak and Nuer continued in 2003 amidst the announcement of plans to build yet another refugee camp for Sudanese Nuer along the border to Sudan. The planned Odier Camp, was to house some 24 000 people and it was to be built on territory traditionally held by the Anuak. In late 2003 fighting between the Nuer and the Anuak subsided, but none of the underlying tensions have been resolved. While the violence in the Anuak- Nuer conflict de-escalated the situation in Gambella continued to be turbulent (see One-sided violence).
