1992 Conflict Archive

Comment on Activity: The year 1992 saw the initiation of hostilities between the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the separatist Serbian Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Violent attacks perpetrated by the government of Bosnia followed on these hostilities, mainly in the areas where Bosnian Serbs forces were on the offensive.
Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The estimates given should be viewed with caution since it has been difficult to establish the exact number of civilians killed during the year. News reporting during the year focused mainly on Sarajevo and its environs, and other areas conquered or controlled by the Bosnian government forces had relatively few international news reporters. The true number of civilians killed is therefore likely to be higher than the given estimates.

1993 Conflict Archive

Comment on Activity: In 1993 armed conflict erupted between the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Croatian Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Clashes took place mainly in central Bosnia, and this is also where the bulk of the one-sided violence was recorded.

The Bosnian government attempted to consolidate its hold on its heartland territory in central Bosnia by expelling the Croatian population from these areas. In the process many Croat civilians were killed.
