Comment on Activity: In 2002, the coalition of FRPI/RCD-K-ML attacked the town of Nyankunde in the Ituri district of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nyankundu had around 14 000 inhabitants, mainly from the Ngiti, Bira and Hema ethnicities. Tension between the Ngiti on the one side and the Bira and Hema on the other side had been high, up to the point where the Ngiti were forced to leave the town. They retaliated under the umbrella of the FRPI together with the RCD-K-ML and massacred over a thousand civilians.
