General information
Type of Incompatibility: Government
Date of first stated goal of incompatibility: 1982-08-01
Comment on date of first stated goals of incompatibility: Since the conflict in Kenya originates from an attempted coup, the incompatibility was not stated prior to the use of armed force.
After seizing control of radio stations the rebels broadcasted the aims of their coup. They referred to the economy as being “in a shambles” and to corruption and mismanagement, declaring that in “these circumstances our armed forces have heeded the peoples call to liberate the country”. They stated that it was ’not the intention of the military to stay in power indefinitely” and meanwhile announced that the Constitution had been suspended, a national liberation council set up and all political prisoners declared free.

Victory: YES

Comment on Victory: Since the conflict in Kenya is represented by an attempted coup, that failed, the government, as being in power after the attempted coup can be seen as victorious. The coup leaders were arrested together with the entire rebellious Air Force and the rebel party was thus destroyed.
Terminated: YES
Type of termination: Victory
Date of termination: 1982-08-31
Comment on Termination: Since the conflict in Kenya is represented by an attempted coup, that failed, the government, as being in power after the attempted coup can be seen as victorious. The coup leaders were arrested together with the entire rebellious Air Force and the rebel party was thus destroyed.
Comment on Termination Date: By the end of August the Air Force rebels no longer posed a threat to the government. The entire Air Force had been disbanded and practically all dissidents had been either killed or arrested. The date 31 August therefore indicates "end of august" rather than the precise day. Note, the UCDP Conflict Termination Dataset codes 21 August as the date of termination. This corresponds to the day when the Government dissolved and re-organised the complete Kenyan Air Force.
The Conflict Termination Dataset focuses on the type of ending a conflict, and the 21 August is seen as the definitive victory of the Government. The Conflict Encyclopedia is more focused on fatalities, and since fighting continued for several days after the re-organisation of the Air Force, "end of August" is coded as the date of termination.
