Comment on Active: In 2015, the violence in Yemen escalated drastically. Ansarallah ousted the government led by President Hadi and took control over the capital in January. According to UCDP definitions, Ansarallah was then seen as the Government of Yemen. Hadi was put under house arrest and resigned on 22 January. After having managed to flee to Aden, Hadi retracted his resignation on 21 February and resumed the position as president. While his government was the internationally recognized one, due to above stated definitions, Forces of Hadi was seen as a non-state actor.
AQAP and Forces of Hadi clashed several times during 2015.

2020 Dyad Archive

2021 Dyad Archive
Comment on Active: AQAP increased its activity during 2021, in particular in Abyan governorate and, to a lesser extent, Hadramawt governorate. This has broken the trend of continuously decreasing activity by AQAP that has been ongoing since 2017. This comes amid a decrease in US drone strikes during the year, following the inauguration of a new US administration at the start of the year. Despite this slight uptick in activity by AQAP, violence remains at relatively low levels, below even those of 2019 and far below those of AQAP's heyday in 2016.
