Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: Although between 8000 and 9000 people were killed in drug-related violence in 2015, the majority of events are not possible to ascribe to a specific group. Information is shady and police are frequently involved in the cartels and their operations. The deaths are therefore only calculated from the clashes and attacks where the actors can be identified. These numbers are the absolute minimum of deaths in the dyad during the year, but the numbers are likely to be higher.
Comment on Active: Los Ardillos challenged Los Rojos over the control of drug trafficking routes in central Guerrero in 2015. Los Ardillos had previously been considered as a rather small criminal group with limited resources and a small area of influence but the group has gained in strength since 2014. Los Ardillos and Los Rojos mainly clashed in the Chilapa de Álvarez municipality and around the Chilpancingo town in 2015. There were numerous times where decapitated and dismembered bodies were found in these areas during the year.

Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: Although between 7000 and 10 000 people were killed in drug-related violence in 2016, the majority of events are not possible to ascribe to a specific group. Due to the continued fractionalization of cartels and groups in Mexico it has become increasingly difficult to attribute drug related violence to a specific group. The deaths are therefore only calculated from the clashes and attacks where the actors can be identified. These numbers are the absolute minimum of deaths in the dyad during the year, but the numbers are likely to be much higher.
Comment on Active: Los Ardillos and Los Rojos continued to fight each other in central Guerrero in 2016. The area was known to be advantageous for opium poppy production and important drug trafficking routes went through the area. The groups fought each other through the use of shoot outs, by leaving the dead bodies of the rival group out in the open along with threatening messages, so called narcomantas, and by decapitating their adversaries.
