Comment on date when dyad reached 25 battle related deaths: The non-state conflict between the Sinaloa Cartel – Los Chavez Matamoros faction and the Sinaloa Cartel – Los Salgueiro faction is first included in UCDP data in 2014. In late September of that year, fighting between the two groups had resulted in more than 25 battle-related deaths when eight people died in a clash between the two groups in Guachochi municipality, Chihuahua.

Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: Although between 6000 and 8000 people were killed in drug-related violence in 2014, the majority of events are not possible to ascribe to a specific group. Information is shady and police are frequently involved in the cartels and their operations. The deaths are therefore only calculated from the clashes and attacks where the actors can be identified. These numbers are the absolute minimum of deaths in the dyad during the year, but the numbers are likely to be higher.
Comment on Active: The groups under the Sinaloa Cartel umbrella have gained increased autonomy when the cartel have become more decentralized than before, this seems especially to be the case with the groups that is located outside of the cartel’s stronghold, Sinaloa state.
Two factions part of the Sinaloa Cartel fought each other in 2014, concerning the control over drug routes that crossed the southwestern part of Chihuahua state. Both of the factions are named after their leaders, the Sinaloa Cartel – Los Chavez Matamoros faction and the Sinaloa Cartel – Los Salgueiro faction. The two factions reportedly still consider themselves to be loyal to the Sinaloa Cartel itself and its high ranking leaders.
The fighting between the two factions were concentrated to the Chihuahua state, more specifically to the municipalities of Guadalupe y Calvo, Bocoyna and Guachochi, all located to the southwest in Chihuahua.
