Comment on Name: In 1970, the new Sultan Qabus bin Said declared the foundation of the independent Sultanate of Oman. Before the country was named "Muscat and Oman".

Comment on Troop Size: In 1975, the Omani government forces numbered 14 000 men (in seven regiments), with additional 1 500 men in a paid home-guard (Firqat).
