Government of Libya - Forces of Muammar Gaddafi
Conflict Goal Issues: The Forces of Muammar Gaddafi was an umbrella term for groups that were under the control or fighting for the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi following his ousting from power in 2011. The group was not characterized by any particular religious, ethnic, or ideological commonalities, but was mostly Muslim and shared the common political goal of restoring Muammar Gaddafi to power. During its first, and only, year of existence, the group stated several conflict goal issues. The group called for the ousting of the National Transitional Council of Libya (NTC) and the establishment of “true democracy” in Libya. The group’s leader Gaddafi also called for the implementation of religion into the judicial system, for economic reforms to remove class-systems, to reform the constitution under the basis that it “lacks the natural source from which it must derive its justification.”, and to remove government corruption. The Forces of Muammar Gaddafi also called for the protection of children’s-, cultural-, gender-, labor-, and religious rights, for the protection of freedom of expression, and for the provision of basic needs and public services.
Conflict Dynamics Issues: During its brief existence, the Forces of Muammar Gaddafi expressed three issues pertaining to the dynamics of the conflict. The group accused the U.S. government and NATO forces of conducting indiscriminate missile strikes against the home of Muammar Gaddafi which resulted in the deaths of “many innocents.” Based on this, the group also called for the removal of NATO forces and military intervention from Libya and for the removal of U.S. influence over the country.
