Comment on date when dyad reached 25 battle related deaths: The Rastas first became active as a one-sided actor in UCDP data in 2005, when the one-sided violence resulted in at least 25 civilian deaths. The threshold was reached in early April after a killing spree in late March and early April killed approximately 50 civilians.

Comment on Active: During 2005 the Rastas group was active in the South Kivu region of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. In the search for food and other supplies, and to dissuade the local populace from cooperating with the Congolese army and the UN presence in the area, the Rastas attacked several rural villages throughout the year. In these attacks the group killed civilians, looted and burned the villages, and also abducted inhabitants. Sometimes these abductees were kept for ransom, whilst many young women and girls were kept as sex slaves.

Comment on Active: The one-sided violence carried out by the Rastas group followed previously recorded patterns. The rebels attacked three villages in the DRC’s remote east during the night, killing 29 civilians using machetes, sticks and hammers . While some villagers were killed on the spot, others were abducted and later found dead in the forests surrounding the villages.
