Comment on Yearly Battle Related Deaths: The fatalities included numerous tourists; Australians being the most prominent group with 88 dead, the other major nationalities represented were Indonesians 38 and British 24. In total the 202 deaths were distributed amongst 23 nationalities.
Comment on Active: In 2002, Indonesia experienced its single bloodiest attack on civilians to date when a series of bomb explosions chocked Kuta Beach on Bali, an entertainment district frequented by tourists. 202 people were killed and approximately 300 were injured. A majority of the victims were foreign. JI claimed that the aim was to attack western foreigners as a mean of retaliation against the injustice against Muslims worldwide. One of the perpetrators was believed to have carried a bomb with him into Paddy’s bar. Upon detonating the first bomb a second, more powerful, bomb was detonated as shocked and injured people congregated on the street outside the crowded bar. The second bomb was placed in a van outside the Sari club, located opposite Paddy’s bar, resulting in a chaotic situation in which over 200 persons lost their lives.
