SUMMARY

The ANC - 'Greens' (African National Congress - 'Greens' faction) originates from a conflict that broke out within ANC supporters in Bhambayi, north of Durban in December 1992. In this informal squatter settlement, the ANC broke up in two factions, of which the 'Greens' faction was the smallest. The ANC was the most powerful and prominent anti-apartheid movement to emerge in response to South Africa's policy of 'apartheid' (i.e. racial separation). For more information on the ANC, see the actor description in the UCDP database. The 'Greens' faction felt that it was marginalized by the local and regional ANC leadership. They occupied a small area in the center of the Bhambayi settlement, and were completely surrounded by the 'Reds'.

In May 1993 the 'Greens' made approaches to the IFP (Inkatha Freedom Party) and people living in the 'Greens' zone started identifying themselves with the IFP. In August 1993 an IFP local branch was launched. From that time onwards the 'Greens' are considered to have been incorporated in the IFP. The IFP was the ANC's chief political rival, and the two parties were involved in a non-state conflict from 1990 to 1996. For more information on the IFP, see the actor description in the UCDP database.

According to some sources, the two factions identified themselves with one of two competing witch-doctors. Due to limited information, it is unclear who the witchdoctors exactly were and what role they played.

ANC - 'Greens' has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
