SUMMARY

The Frente William Rivas (William Rivas Front) was a paramilitary faction that operated under the umbrella of the Bloque Norte (Northern Block) of the AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia; United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia), one of the most violent and feared paramilitary coalitions in the country’s history. The Northern Block gained a notorious reputation for its brutal tactics and extensive operations along Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

The Frente William Rivas emerged around 1997, coinciding with the formal creation of the AUC as a national paramilitary force. However, the group reached the peak of its activity between 2003 and 2004, when it became particularly active in the department of Magdalena, on Colombia’s northern coast. Its operations were concentrated in several municipalities, including Aracataca, Ciénaga, Fundación, Guamal, and Zona Bananera — regions that experienced heightened levels of violence and intimidation during this period.

Over the years, the Frente William Rivas saw a rotation of leadership, with several commanders taking charge at different stages of its existence. Among these leaders, José Gregorio Mangonez Lugo, known by the alias “Carlos Tijeras”, and Omar Enrique Martínez Ossías, alias “Maicol”, stood out as two of the most notorious figures associated with the group, contributing to its violent campaigns against civilians.

The group ceased its operations in 2006, following the demobilization process initiated under the peace negotiations between the Colombian government and the AUC.

Frente William Rivas has been involved in the one-sided category of UCDP organized violence.
