SUMMARY
Muslims are the majority population in Indonesia - over 88% of Indonesians declare themselves as followers of various Islamic denominations. Moreover, Indonesia is home to more Muslims than any other country in the world. As such Muslim ideas wield significant influence in the Indonesian society since independence. While a relatively modern and tolerant form of Sunni Islam is prevalent within Indonesia, all other denominations of Islam (such as Shia or Ahle Hadith) are also present within the country.
While the Muslim faith is dominant in almost all areas of the country, there are areas, such as Papua, the Maluku Islands or parts of Sulawesi where Muslims are either a minority or represent approximately half of the total population.
While sectarian violence does not characterize most Muslim communities in Indonesia, there were some significant such incidents, mainly in the Maluku Islands.
Muslims of Indonesia have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
