SUMMARY

The Subol Al-Salam Brigade was a Libyan militia group active in deserts and oases of Libya’s southern Kufra district. The Subol Al-Salam Brigade was one of many militia groups to emerge after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. As the Libyan security forces were in disarray after the 2011 uprising, local armed groups emerged to capitalize on the power vacuum, and in some instances to protect local populations. The Subol Al-Salam Brigade was comprised of fighters recruited from its area of operation; Abd al Rahman Hashem - the group’s leader - belonged to the Zuwaya tribe, one of the largest communal groups in Kufrah. The group was also involved in the extensive human trafficking industry that developed in Libya following Gaddafi’s ouster; it would for example detain African migrants and extort them for money.

When fighting against the SRF, the Subol Al-Salam Brigade appears to have received warring support from another local group, the Kufra Revolutionaries Battalion.

As of 2018, the group was part of the Forces of House of Representatives, and thus no longer existed as an independent actor in the UCDP data.
