SUMMARY

Darfur Joint Resistance Forces was a coalition of three armed rebel groups that formed on 2 March 2014. It maintained a government incompatibility and hence, joined the ranks of many other groups by participating actively in the decades-long intrastate conflict against the Government of Sudan during 2014 and 2015. The coalition existed until 6 July 2017.

The Darfur Joint Resistance Forces comprised of the following three groups: the SLM/A, SLM/A – MM, and the smaller Sudan Liberation Movement for Justice (SLMJ, also called LMJ-TH). Its activity was limited mostly to the northern part of Darfur and the Darfur Joint Resistance Forces claimed to facilitate local communities in creating their own systems of civil governance without interference.

Key figures of the Darfur Joint Resistance Forces were Abdul Wahid, leader of SLM/A, Minni Minawi, leader of SLM/A – MM and Taher Hajar, leader of SLMJ. Until his killing during clashes in June 2014, Ali Karbino was another important leadership figure of the Darfur Joint Resistance Forces and served as the military leader for the SLMJ.

Although there was no alliance between the SRF coalition and the Darfur Joint Resistance Forces, both the SLM/A and SLM/A – MM fought interchangeably for these groups as members of both coalitions.

As the SLM/A and SLM/A – MM were members of the larger SRF coalition before joining the Darfur Joint Resistance Forces and retained both coalition memberships simultaneously, only violence committed with the presence of or by the SLMJ is included under the Darfur Joint Resistance Forces. Incidents of violence occurring with either only or both the SLM/A and SLM/A – MM present is coded under the SRF.
