SUMMARY
Following the Second World War, a communist regime was established in Romania. After the death of president Gheorghiu-Dej in 1965, there was a succession squabble within the communist party out of which Nicolae Ceausescu emerged as the new leader. Ceausescu’s domestic rule was rigid and he did not tolerate any opposition. In December 1989, protests against his regime expanded into an armed conflict between forces of the government and the National Salvation Front. Ceausescu was removed from power and the former leader of the National Salvation Front, Ion Iliescu, was popularly elected president in 1990.
The government of Romania has been involved in the intrastate and one-sided categories of UCDP organised violence.
