SUMMARY

Jamaat Jund al-Sahaba (Soldiers of the Prophets Companions) was a Sunni muslim organisation in Iraq 2005-2006 with the stated goal of attacking Shia muslims.

Little is known about the background of the group except what they themselves stated in their first communiqué in March 2005 taking responsibility for a bomb attack in Mosul. In the document, it is declared that the group was formed by Sunni muslims to “defend and protect our religion and stop the rising storm that is coming from the Shiites to invade the land of the Muslims” and that the leader of the group was Sheikh Abu Abbas Al-Omari. The group proceeded by accusing the Iraqi government forces, in particular the National Guard, of being infiltrated by Shia extremist militias.

In October 2006, the Jamaat Jund al-Sahaba ceased to exist as an independent organisation as the group joined ISI (Islamic State in Iraq).

Jamaat Jund al-Sahaba has been involved in the one-sided category of UCDP organised violence.
