SUMMARY
The Mamprusi people are an ethnic group that resides in the northern parts of Ghana. They number approximately 220 000 and are concentrated between the White Volta and Nasia rivers. A few thousands also live in neighboring Togo. Even though Islam has become more common during the last decades, traditional beliefs are deeply rooted and are the most common religious expression amongst the Mamprusi people. Like many other tribes in northern Ghana, the Mamprusi people are ruled by a traditional chief and the elders have a strong position within the group. The main livelihood for the group is farming, but also hunting and fishing play a role.
The Mamprusi have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
