SUMMARY
CPJP (Convention of Patriots for Justice and Peace) was a rebel group based in the Central African Republic (CAR). The group became known in 2009 when it published their first communiqué on 7 January 2009. In this statement the CPJP stated that "today its evident that the problem of our country is Francois Bozize" and the CPJP demanded the resignation of Francois Bozize because he had betrayed and abandoned the people of CAR. This group was based in the northeastern part of CAR that boarders Chad and Sudan's volatile region of Darfur. The region was characterized of cross-border dynamics with rebels (and bandits) from different countries going in and out of the region.
The founding leader of CPJP was Charles Massi who between 2005 and 2008 served as a Minister of Defence in Bozize's government. In January 2010 Charles Massi was killed under uncertain conditions, his supporters said that he was tortured to death by the government but the allegation could not be independently confirmed. 30 January 2010, President Bozizé acknowledged that Massi had been killed, without providing details for his death. After the death of Massi the CPJP rebellion continued, led by Abdoulaye Hissene. The fighting consisted of fairly small-scale attacks in the north-eastern part of the country. CPJP continued to clash with the government in February-April 2011 but after the fighting ceased they opened a door to negotiations with the Government. These negotiations led to signing of a peace agreement with the Government on 12 June 2011.
In addition to fighting the government the CPJP have been fighting against the UFDR over control of diamond mines.
On 25 August 2012 CPJP-Fundamental splintered from CPJP. in DEcember the splinter faction CPJP-Fundamental entered into the Seleka alliance.
CPJP has been involved in the intrastate and non-state categories of UCDP organised violence.
