SUMMARY

The Palipehutu-FNL – LP (Parti pour la libération du peuple Hutu – Forces nationales de libération – Lovers of Peace) emerged in August 2007 as a dissident faction from the main Palipehutu-FNL rebel group in Burundi. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Nestor Banzubaze, also known as Banes, this faction broke away due to disagreements over the main group's withdrawal from the peace process. The LP faction committed to rejoining the peace negotiations.

While rooted in Hutu nationalism, the Palipehutu-FNL – LP faction adopted a more moderate stance compared to its parent organization. The faction emphasized the importance of peace and reintegration, aligning itself with the broader objectives of national reconciliation and stability in Burundi.

In 2008, the African Union Special Task Force registered 2,740 combatants belonging to the Palipehutu-FNL – LP faction . These members were former fighters of the main Palipehutu-FNL group who chose to support the peace process and disengage from ongoing hostilities.

Palipehutu-FNL – LP has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
