SUMMARY

The Bini ethnic group, often referred to as Edo, is a group with a prominent history. They originate from the area that is today Edo state, and particularly Benin City. Historically the Edo people conquered and subjugated several other tribes and people. The Edo relied on trade, establishing a large and complex system of trade routes. The reason for the differentiation in names, Bini/Edo, is geographical. Bini are the Edo people who live in or around Benin City. Bini speak a Kwa language of the Niger-Congo family.

Historically Bini/Edo has been ruled by a tribal king, Oba. In recent times the tribal ancestry has faded away and diminished in importance. In connection to the violence that Bini have been involved in there has not been any clear leader.

Bini have been involved in the non-state category of UCDP-organised violence.
