SUMMARY

The Shiluk is the third larges ethnic group in South Sudan with Dinka and Nuer being the only two larger groups. Shiluk is the most used name for this ethnic group but the group themselves prefer the name Chollo. The traditional homeland of the Shilluk is in Upper Nile in Southern Sudan. The Shilluk believe that they originate from Uganda. The Shiluk are the only Sudanese ethnic group that still has a kingdom and a king. The King is the highest authority and the kingdom is divided into areas administrated by Chiefs and each village is overseen by elders and a sub-chief. Most Shiluk believe in traditional religions but more and more Shiluk are attracted by Christianity. The Shiluk are pastoralist keeping foremost cattle, goats and sheep. However, they also complement their main livelihood with cultivation.

The Shiluk has been involved in the non-state category of UCDP organised violence.
