Update Alert No. 19
25 June, 2015

Major data releases

In June, UCDP released three new versions of the annually updated datasets as well the UCDP Georeferenced Events Dataset release 1.9 (UCDP GED 1.9).

UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v.4-2015

The latest version of the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset is updated with the armed conflicts active in 2014, as well as with a number of revisions for the years 1946-2013 (these can be viewed in the version history file). The dataset is presented in the July issue of Journal of Peace Research, complete with a description of armed conflicts in 2014.

UCDP Dyadic Dataset v.1-2015

In conjunction with the release of the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset the UCDP has also released a dyadic version. The UCDP Dyadic Dataset lists all dyads active in armed conflicts between 1946 and 2014 and is thus more disaggregated than the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset.

UCDP Battle-related Deaths Dataset v.5-2015

The UCDP Battle-related Deaths Dataset, a conflict-year and dyad-year dataset, contains information on the number of battle-related deaths in the conflicts that appear in the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset between 1989 and 2014.

UCDP Georeferenced Events Dataset release 1.9 (UCDP GED 1.9)

The UCDP Georeferenced Events Dataset release 1.9 (UCDP GED 1.9) covers individual incidents of armed conflict and organised violence (i.e. clashes, battles and attacks against civilians) in East and Southeastern Asia over a 26-year span covering January 1989 to December 2014.

All datasets can be downloaded from pcr.uu.se/research/ucdp/datasets and ucdp.uu.se/ged.

Publications

The UCDP’s latest data on armed conflicts in 2014 published in Journal of Peace Research

The UCDP article “Armed Conflicts, 1946-2014” by Therése Pettersson and Peter Wallensteen will be published shortly in Journal of Peace Research (JPR).

This year’s article, “Armed Conflicts, 1946-2014”, presents the latest developments in armed conflicts during 2014 by drawing on data from the most recent versions of the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset (v.4-2015), the UCDP Dyadic Dataset (v.1-2015) and the UCDP Battle-related Deaths Dataset (v.5-2015), as well as from the UCDP Conflict Encyclopedia.

In 2014, UCDP recorded 40 active conflicts in the world, which is an increase by six since 2013. The number has increased in recent years but is substantially lower than in 1991, the peak year after the end of the Cold War. 2014 also saw an increase in the number of battle-related deaths. An escalation of several conflicts, and the extremely violent conflict in Syria, resulted in the highest number of battle-related deaths since the end of the Cold War.
