UCDP GED DATA DOWNLOAD
Download UCDP GED Point Dataset (v. 1.1-2011)
This dataset is UCDP's most disaggregated dataset, covering individual events of organized violence ( phenomena of lethal violence occurring at a given time and place). These events are sufficiently fine-grained to be geo-coded down to the level of individual villages, with temporal durations disaggregated to single, indiviudal days. As such, the study of violence is no longer confined to the country level, but can be taken down to the sub-national, local, or, indeed, village level. Further, scholars no longer need to use the year as the object of analysis, as individual days of violence are captured by the dataset.
In the same time, this dataset employs the same level of precision and definitional coherence that is expected from UCDP making it both reliable and fully compatible with all of UCDPs aggregated datasets.
This dataset covers Africa between 1989 and 2010, with 21.860 individual events being part of this release. This version released 2012-03-28
CSV
UCDP GED Point data as comma-separated values. Suitable for import in statistical software, for use with various scripts and programming languages etc. Includes the codebook and all appendices. The file is Unicode-encoded with BOM as to maintain spelling in various non-latin alphabets if needed.
Excel
UCDP GED Point data as an Excel file (.xlsx). Suitable for usage with various office software (Microsoft Office, Libre Office) as well as for import in various GIS solutions (such as ESRI's ArcGIS).
Google KML
UCDP GED Point data as a Google Earth file (.kml/.kmz). Ready to use in Google Earth and compatible software. Data is stored as Google Earth points (pins). If you intend to process the data (either via KML management tools or as XML through a programming language) please read the attached 'Platform Notice'.
SQL dump
UCDP GED data as an SQL dump, ready for import in your database system. Currently compatible with MySQL. Please read the 'Platform Notice' (part of the zip file) before using the data
Download UCDP GED Conflict Polygons (v. 1.1-2011)
This dataset covers 'conflict polygons', i.e. geographical areas that have been affected by each of the three types of organized violence per UCDPs definition. These geographical areas are built in a standardized fashion, using the methodology described below, with the explicit aim of providing a coherent, easily-comparable and standardized dataset.
Two separate versions are included, provided as two separate files (each download contains both files, plus the codebook and all appendices).
One of the files has the conflict polygon as the object of analysis. This file contains conflict zones covering the territorial extent of individual state-based conflicts, non-state conflicts and one-sided violence in Africa for the entire 1989-2010 period (one polygon per conflict).
The other file has the yearly conflict polygon as the object of the analysis. This file contains conflict zones covering the territorial extent of individual state-based conflicts, non-state conflicts and one-sided violence in each year between 1989 and 2010 (one polygon per conflict per year).
KML
UCDP GED Polygons (conflict zones) dataset as two Google KML files. (both are downloaded in the same package, together with the codebook and the appendices).
Both files are correct XML and contain the variables in separate ExtendedData fields, so they can be used for analysis through XML-capable software. The KML file containing yearly polygons is animated so one can visualize the spatial spread and changes of each conflict throughout the period.

ESRI Shapefile
UCDP GED Polygons (conflict zones) dataset as two ESRI Shapefiles (.shp/.shx/.dbf combinations). (both are downloaded in the same package, together with the codebook and the appendices).
Suitable for use with ArcGIS and other GIS-based solutions.
